John Emsley M.B.E

A life shaped by hard work, lifelong learning, and community service

John A. Emsley MBE was born in 1950 in Leeds, growing up in a close-knit back-to-back community where responsibility arrived early. By the age of ten, he was already trusted to unlock the front door each morning and light the coal fire—habits that reflected the reliability and work ethic that would stay with him throughout his life.

After attending Saint Simons in Burley/Kirkstall and Hawksworth Secondary School, John studied Mechanical Engineering and completed his craft studies in 1971. He then began a long career underground as a belt foreman at Saville Pit, spending 20 years working in one of Britain’s most demanding industries. During those years he lived in Normanton, where he and his wife raised their daughter Lisa and became part of the local community.

When Saville Pit closed, John moved to Gascoigne Wood Mine and relocated the family to South Milford. Although Gascoigne Wood did not close in 1992, major workforce reductions meant John took early redundancy that year. It was a turning point—but one he transformed into opportunity.

Determined to keep growing, John went to university as a mature student to study History and Politics at the University of Huddersfield. His dedication earned him a First-Class Honours degree, a milestone he cherished quietly but proudly.

After completing his degree, John began a new career with the Department for Work and Pensions in Leeds. Starting at entry level, he worked his way up to Team Leader and eventually Executive Officer. His calm approach, fairness, and practical leadership made him a trusted figure among colleagues and the public alike.

John’s interest in politics naturally evolved into public service. He was elected as a councillor for the Monk Fryston Ward on Selby District Council, where he served two successful terms. His commitment earned strong support from residents, and he was invited to stand for a third term, though he declined due to other commitments.

Throughout his working life, John often joked that he’d love to live in a small village just outside of Wakefield—he adored the area but always thought it was out of reach. In a gentle twist of irony, after decades of hard work, he and his wife have happily retired to that very village.

John’s many contributions to community life and public service led to his nomination for an MBE—an honour he accepted with characteristic modesty.

Now retired, John enjoys the quieter pace of life while remaining deeply connected to the values that shaped him: hard work, curiosity, community, and a lifelong dedication to helping others.
